Stability is a fundamental part of a barge’s characteristics – it says something about how steady it is. Ensuring satisfactory stability is important for operational safety, as well as for personnel. Aquastructures offers stability calculations of barges and floating structures, where the results are evaluated against the requirements in the Norwegian standard NS 9415:2009.
We utilize the in-house stability program AquaStab to reveal the characteristics of the barge. When stability is calculated, two different states are controlled: intact and damage. Key parameters that are determined in these conditions are centre of gravity (COG), centre of buoyancy (COB), metacentric height (GM) and righting arm (GZ). Through the analysis the vessel is exposed to overturning moments that are quantified to determine the hydrostatic properties.
